I'm really not complaining about the way the price of gas has risen over the past few years. According to the US Energy Information Administration it really hasn't changed an enormous amount in real terms.*

No. What really pisses me off is that oil companies--thanks to their influence over Congress, I assume--can so blatantly disguise the true price of their product. See those little fractions of a cent after the main price--the oil companies, of course, hope you don't.
There's no such legal tender as 1/10 of a cent, yet they add on nine of them--and do you know what; most people don't notice they're being charged nearly one cent a gallon more than they think they're paying.

OK, you say, then they're pretty stupid people. So--it's alright to con stupid people out of an extra penny? Get real, Big Oil.
